Founding of NetApp

NetApp Incorporated is a US company that operates in the areas of data management and data storage.

Netapp was founded in 1992 under the name Network Appliance by the three Americans James Lau, David Hitz and Michael Malcom.

Already in the first year, the three developers achieved something visionary when they developed the snapshot technology. With this technique, like a picture, a kind of "snapshot" is made, with which data can be saved. The method will continue to be used. It is not, however, a substitute for a classic backup, but can be seen more as a kind of lifeline. The snapshot does not create a copy of the data to be backed up, as would be the case with a backup, but creates a differentiating disk on which the processes of the original data source are intercepted.

Just two years later, the Americans took the next big step with the introduction of SnapMirror replication technology. This enables replication between storage end products, such as from a hard drive to the cloud, to be much more efficient. This also protects against unwanted data loss through constant synchronous replication.

Products supporting SnapMirror are for example the AFF A-Series, the FAS NetApp Storage and SolidFire.

NetApp in mid-2000s

Thanks to the high quality of its products and services, NetApp is now used by many companies and service providers, including SAP, Yahoo! and Texas Instruments. In 2004, the company reached the next milestone when they presented Thin Provisioning to the world. This differs from the contrary thick provisioning in the point that storage space is no longer used as a constant, fixed amount, but is used individually according to current needs. The "lean memory allocation" is primarily used in storage area networks. These work by providing virtual storage capacity that is currently not used by other participants in this network, which can be accessed by other users if necessary.

NetApp Storage

This new way of storing data caused a stir in the technology industry and garnered huge recognition for the company. In keeping with the “sharing economy”, which is also useful in other areas in everyday life, the developers of this storage option can rightly be very proud of it. In the meantime, however, the focus of Netapp has reached cloud technology, for which various methods are provided. NetApp's portfolio currently includes native cloud services, cloud storage technology and simple cloud management. Internationally known customers such as Mercedes-Benz or Dreamworks rely on the competence of the Americans.

When you buy a remanufactured product, you not only protect your wallet, but also the environment. Existing products continue to be used so that no further resources have to be used. At Kimbrer Computer, we give you a 1-year guarantee on all of our products.
